Today, I released a detailed report after several months of analysis of over 1,100 data breaches that were reported in the U.S. during the last four years. You might be astounded as I have been during the last few yearsto learn there are only a few hundred reported data breaches each year. Those of you who have heard me speak or have read my book, Privacy MakeOver, know I don't believe this low number of breaches.

It is not uncommon to receive an email from a business or not-for-profit organization (NPO) that gives an exhaustive email list of all the intended recipients in the carbon copy (cc:) line of the email. An open email distribution like this is considered a poor privacy practice and poor email etiquette.
The risks of sending an open email distribution include the compromise of valuable intellectual property (the mailing list), privacy violations that could result in regulatory action and an unprofessional appearance that reflects on the credibility of your organization.

It might be a sophisticated cyber-scheme to get your customer credit card account information or low-tech espionage where a competitor manually guesses at individual user names and passwords. They find out who your customers are, what they are ordering and how much they pay; then they contact them with better deals.
Either way, a crime has been committed. Your cyber property has been burglarized and your information assets have been stolen.

Four years ago today, ChoicePoint shocked the nation by admitting to the largest data breach of the time involving 145,000 consumer records. That number has been dwarfed by the TJX Companies compromise of approximately 100 million consumer records and last month by Heartland Payment Systems which some describe as the largest of all breaches, although the number of records compromised remains unknown.

A recent study suggests that women are more likely to be victims of identity theft than men are. The reporting suggests women are less technical savvy than men who favor online transactions over face-to-face transactions. Women, what do you think? Is this really the explanation?

A few weeks ago, I produced a video "How to Steal Social Security Numbers on the Web." The purpose was to educate and alert consumers that their Social Security Number (SSN) may be freely available through their local city or county government Web site.
It's no accident, city and county clerks knowingly put your information at risk on the web for anyone to access. And there is more!

Today President Obama signs the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, a plan designed to pump $787 billion into the economy. The real cost of the plan has been estimated to exceed three trillion dollars over 10 years.
Public opinion and debate have been high over this unprecedented government spending.
Few have recognized that businesses lost over a trillion dollars last year and these losses will mount annually. These businesses losses result from

This week begins a new era in the Privacy Diary Blog. The blog is open to your comments.
Some blogs are one-sided propaganda. Others are more of a diary than an interactive forum as this one has been.
I've sat on numerous committees in recent years where the subject of opening up online forums and Web logs to the public has been controversial and often nixed—
