LifeLock Truck, Truck with Social Security Number
I have been alerting consumers in Wisconsin and the nation that certain counties allow taxpayer Social Security Numbers (SSNs) to be accessed by anyone through certain county Web sites.

Some of the undertones by bureaucrats to this consumer awareness movement are defensive and negative. For example, they say:

  • I am alerting crooks to a source of SSNs;
  • identity theft by international terrorists and fraudsters is not believable or likely; and
  • the latter is a scare tactic.

During the past several weeks, I have been increasing public awareness to Social Security Numbers (SSNs) available through government-operated Web sites throughout the country. I am bringing attention to the reality that personally identifiable information, publicly available on the Web, is available to anyone on the planet.

I suggested that information such as SSNs is potentially accessed by "bad people" in third world countries, as well as those in the U.S. I included terrorists, drug dealers and users, and organized crime. Apparently, some people find my suggestions hard to believe.

Over the last several weeks, I have been increasing consumer awareness about Social Security Numbers (SSNs) that are accessible to anyone on the planet through public record Web sites operated by local, county and state governments. By increasing awareness, concerned citizens should proactively contact their local and state lawmakers so that sensitive information like SSNs will be protected.

I have asked myself and others have asked, "doesn't bringing awareness to such a problem alert crooks to take advantage of the situation. Doesn't awareness and whistle blowing increase the risk."  Hmm, is it an ethical dilemma?

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recently reported that identity theft, the "Number 1" consumer complaint, increased more than 20% in 2008 over 2009. The crime will continue to increase until the level of awareness on causes and prevention reaches a critical level in the U.S.

Often, I am asked whether one should sign credit cards or not. Today, I received the follow suggestion by email "Attorney's Advice—Do not sign the back of your credit cards. Instead, put PHOTO ID REQUIRED."

Merchant agreements advise merchants to only accept credit cards that have been signed. If you don't sign your credit cards, the merchant may turn you away, but there is a solution.

One way to build your business is to build your recognition as being a credible and helpful expert, according to many who write and lecture on the subject. One technique that many recommend is forwarding articles of interest to clients and prospects, especially those about you and your business.

Today, the Internet makes getting information out to others simple. Most online publications include an "E-mail this Article to a Friend" feature. But, you had better test it first, or you, like me, may find yourself in an embarrassing position and potentially hurting your credibility!

Tax Time—Employers and Employees Beware
Identity Theft

I received an inquiry from a person who worked at a restaurant for a short period. This employee was surprised when he received a W-2 Wage and Tax Statement from the employer. Why surprised? He claimed he did not complete any paperwork or provide any documentation such as a Social Security Number for employment. He also claimed the wages shown on the W-2 Form were significantly higher than what he was paid.

This issue is a reminder to employers and employees to beware.

Digital Imaging has become a common document management process. Certain information on documents such as Social Security Numbers (SSNs) is considered sensitive information. If your organization is housing the documents and their images, they should be secured and access should be restricted to those who have a need to know (authorized users). Even then, do authorized users who have a need to access the document have a need to access the SSN of the subject? If not, other approaches, such as redaction should be considered. And what about document sharing?

Data—Pollution of the Information Age

Occasionally I am rendered speechless or without opinion. Today an article by privacy and security guru Bruce Schneier was published in the BBC Tech Lab. [Silence.]

Schneier discusses how computer technology and a thoughtful list of current applications have been changing our lives and threatening our privacy. His forecast of technology applications for of the future is bright, but with data pollution as the toxic by product.

While information can be an asset, Schneier argues that we must all get involved immediately to discuss and adopt solutions to prevent the increasing toxicity that information and data have on society.
